2 x PHD 66,6% ZOOMECULAR ERC Advanced Grant Positions As part of the European Research Council funded Advanced Grant project "ZOOMECULAR", the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, MARUM, is searching to extend its current team with two PhD students starting from December 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Project ZOOMECULAR is being carried out in the research group "Organic Geochemistry" led by Prof. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs at the University of Bremen. The major challenge to be addressed by ZOOMECULAR is to decode the sedimentary fine print of lipid biomarkers. Therefore µm-scale molecular images of paleoenvironmentally and geobiologically relevant compounds will be obtained directly on surfaces of cut sediment cores via laser-desorption ionization coupled to mass spectrometry (cf. Wörmer et al., PNAS, 2014). Such high resolution analysis will allow interrogating laminated sediment archives of Late Quaternary climate change, provide a new view of the mechanisms underlying delivery and preservation of molecular signals in sedimentary records, and investigate globally important biogeochemical processes on a new scale. Both PhD students will initially be involved in enabling these pioneering studies through development of innovative analytical protocols for a suite of informative biomarkers in sedimentary matrices. The spatial and temporal distribution of these biomarkers will be examined in a range of environmental samples in undisturbed, laminated marine and lake sediments. After initial method development, one thesis project (position A) will emphasize ultra-high resolution paleoenvironmental reconstruction while the other project (position B) will continue with further in-depth method development, analytical validation, calibrations and the implementation of complementary high resolution elemental imaging by µXRF into the work flow. We are searching highly motivated and skilled candidates with the following requirements:
- A completed MSc degree, preferentially in the Geosciences and/or Chemistry
- Experience in microbial lipid biomarker analysis in geoscientific contexts and/or in spatially resolved chemical analysis
- Experience in marine science and/or geochemical laboratory methods, and strong interest in analytical development.
- Applicants should have excellent English language skills and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team. The positions are available under the condition of release of funds and are initially limited to a term of 3 years (PhD positions). Positions are funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Salary and benefits are commensurate with the federal German employee scale EG 13 TV-L (PhD: 66.6 %). Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a statement describing research interests, the applicant
- s research and technical background as they relate to the position, and contact information for up to three referees. More information on research and technology at the MARUM is available at www.marum.de As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to disabled persons. The University of Bremen expressly invites persons with migration background to apply. Deadline for the application is September 30, 2015. Applications should be sent to Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs MARUM, University of Bremen Leobener Straße 28359 Bremen khinrichs(at)marum.de For informal inquiries please contact Prof. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, Tel. +49 421 218 65700 or mailto: khinrichs@marum.de. - Geforderte Anlagen: Lebenslauf, Zeugnisse
