JOB DESCRIPTION     Job Title:                    Head of Unit   Reports to:                General Manager   Purpose of Job:   To manage all aspects of the delivery of care to residents within the Home, or a defined part of the Home, with particular emphasis on the development, monitoring and audit of professional standards to ensure high quality care is provided.       Main Responsibilities:   (In addition to those of an RN)   1.    Plan, organise and manage the unit and all resources therein. Supervise staff, carry out regular appraisals for staff, and report problems as appropriate.   2.    Assess staffing requirements and prepare rotas. Monitor staffing and record attendance, absence and relief/agency cover. Rotas must be an accurate record of hours worked.   3.    Provide professional leadership to all nursing and care staff. Train, develop and otherwise facilitate learning by staff and students. Encourage all staff to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge. Develop and implement training programmes including rostering of study days and liaising with the Home Trainer.   4.    Identify, develop and implement quality initiatives. Monitor and audit all aspects of the delivery of care, develop processes for clinical supervision.   5.    Documentation relating to the delivery of care must be completed accurately, legibly and in accordance with company standards. Participate in the formal audit process at the request of the General Manager.   6.    Identify, assess and manage risks in the unit to residents, staff and visitors and ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation and rules.   7.    Communicate fully with staff, managers and external health care professionals and educationalists and with colleagues e.g. Clinical Development Nurses on clinical research and development programmes involving the unit.   8.    Through joint work with the General Manager and the Administrator ensure effective use of resources whilst working within agreed budget.     9.    Ensure staff are aware of, and comply with, all necessary company policies, charters, standards, guidelines, care requirements and legislation and follow the Adult Protection Guidelines.   10.    Participate in continuous process improvements and make recommendations  for change with regard to clinical and non-clinical policy.   11.    Contribute to the development of new ideas in nursing and social care in respect of stimulation for residents to improve their quality of life.   12.    Assist with the investigation of any complaints and deal with any grievances and any disciplinary issues as necessary.   13.    Keep the General Manger informed of any relevant issues.     14.    Develop and maintain Named Nurse/Keyworker system.   15.    Participate in the on-call rota.   NB Where there is no Deputy Manager in post, this job will be expected also to include the duties of that post as required.     Barchester is committed to providing professional, respectful and quality care, whilst maintaining exceptional standards to ensure residents enjoy the highest quality of life. Experience: Experience:   1.    Nursing experience including care for older people.   2.    Ability to evaluate resident care and act accordingly if untoward changes occur.   3.    Experience of recording accurate daily care plans.   4.    Knowledge of co-ordinating shift rotas.   5.    Practical experience of providing high quality care and exceeding expectations.   6.    Evidence of personal continuing professional development.   7.    Ability to motivate and work with a team of staff.     1.    Experience of establishing relationships with other healthcare professionals; including GPs and social workers.   2.    Demonstrate ability to provide leadership, to motivate and provide guidance to staff.   3.    Knowledge of organising activities to enhance lives of residents.
